The village of Edlingham nestles in the scenic Northumberland countryside. With the ruins of a medieval castle, a quaint church and a handful of houses, overlooking a river valley, it is a beautiful sight for anyone driving along the Alnwick to Rothbury road.

But few people will know it was also the setting for one of the most infamous episodes in the history of Northumberland police. The events of one night in 1879 were to lead to two innocent men being jailed for life. And it was only another tragedy that was to lead to them walking free from prison.
